Dr. George Papathanassiou is working as Associate Professor of Engineering Geology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Geology, while he had been in the past an Assistant Professor of Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics at the Department of Civil Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace (2018-2021).
He was born in 1973 in Thessaloniki, Greece. He holds a Doctoral Degree, an MSc in Engineering Geology and a bachelor’s degree in Geology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Geology.
He has published more than 90 papers in international journals, book chapters and international conferences. His work was cited in more than 650 published articles.
He has participated in many research contracts in the field of the geohazards such as liquefaction and landslide hazard, rock slope stability, development of geohazard-related databases, natural gas pipelines, and soil and rock mechanics.
His expertise includes liquefaction and ground failure, rockfall and landslide analysis, geohazards, earthquake engineering geology, post-event reconnaissance and use of LiDar and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for rockfall-landslide hazard and monitoring.
Dr. Papathanassiou has been a member of professional and scientific bodies such as IAEG, and Greek Geological Society as well as a reviewer for numerous journals, such as “Engineering Geology”, “Journal of Geotechnical and Geological Engineering”, “Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering” and others
