ACADEMIC ACTIVITY – ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS
He served at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Department of Civil Engineering) from 1980 to 2020, since 1999 as Professor of “Coastal Engineering and Oceanography“.
He served (05/2016-06/2019) as President & CEO of the Water Supply & Sewerage Company of Thessaloniki (EYATH) SA.
He was Director of the Department of Hydraulics & Environmental Engineering and Director of the Laboratory of Marine Engineering & Marine Projects of the School of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.
During his academic tenure he has been a member of many committees and groups of the School of Civil Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, related to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, library organization, organization of studies, research, etc. He was also a member of the General Assembly of the Department of Civil Engineering, the Senate, the plenary session of the Research Committee and the Environmental Council of the U.P.T.H.
He taught both in the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of the Department of Civil Engineering courses on Port and Coastal Engineering Projects, Coastal Oceanography, Marine Environmental Protection, Environmental Impacts of Projects, Transport & Dispersion of Pollutants, Coastal Zone Management etc., as well as in postgraduate programmes of other departments of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National Academy of Sciences.
RESEARCH ACTIVITY
He has served as a member of research teams and as a scientific coordinator of a significant number of national (OPEAEK, THALES, SYNERGY, etc.) and European programmes, basic and applied research and projects (MAST, FP5, FP6, etc. ), funded from national and/or European resources, in areas related to coastal engineering, monitoring and protection of the marine and coastal environment, sewage works & submarine sewage disposal pipelines, protection and management of the coastal zone, implementation of the Water Directive, coastal flooding, coastal erosion and coastal protection works, coastal hydrodynamic circulation-wave and pollutant dispersion models, coastal oceanography, oil spill dispersion, aquaculture, marine operational short term forecasting and long term changes due to climate change.
The areas of application of his scientific and research activity include the Thermaikos Gulf, the Strymonikos, the Maliakos, the Gulf of Aliveri, the Amvrakikos, the Greek coastline vulnerable to coastal flooding, the eastern Mediterranean, etc.
He has examined, attended and supervised a significant number of undergraduate and postgraduate theses and PhD dissertations at the School of Civil Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and other universities.
He has authored a large number of papers, in international and Greek journals and in international and Greek conferences, studies and technical reports, research and applied projects, in the fields of his scientific and research activity.
