Athena Peglidou is assistant professor at School of History and Archeology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She has studied Philosophy, Pedagogy & Psychology at the Faculty of Philosophy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Ptychio,1993), Social Anthropology (D.E.A., 1995) and (Thèse en Doctorat, 2004) at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (E.H.E.S.S.), Anthropological Documentary at the universities Nanterre – Paris X & École Pratique des Hautes Études (E.P.H.E.) (D.E.A., 1998) in Paris.
Her first researches focused on the gendering of mental disorder and the construction of diagnosis through the example of cleaning compulsion and depression in the Greek context. Her doctoral thesis explored the experience of depression and treatment-seeking practices by managing different therapeutic powers and it was based on ethnographic fieldwork of the therapeutic itineraries between the medical and the religious and their boundaries (practitioners, magicians, monks). It has been analyzed how gender is interrelated with self-healing and self-care, psychotropic drug taking, care and hospitalization. She has conducted visual ethnographic research on the gendered experience of the Greek-Albanian border (2004-7), the moral economy of gifts in the medical context (2011-12), the relationship between social vulnerability, inequality and schizophrenia (2013-15), the construction of sacrifice and heroism in the Covid-19 era (2019-20). She was interested in the interrelation between colonialism and Greek folklore studies using as an analytical concept the audiovisual media and the images of popular culture (2017-18). She participated in the COST Action IS1206 Femicide Across Europe (2013-17), in the creation of the European Observatory on Femicide (E.O.F.) in 2018. In 2019, she created femicide.gr (https://femicide.gr/). He is a member of the Advisory Board of the European Observatory on Femicide (E.O.F.). She has developed courses on anthropology of gender, anthropology of suffering, anthropology of health and care, anthropology of the body, gender and health and courses on theory and practice of ethnographic film at the Department of History, Archaeology and Social Anthropology at the University of Thessaly, at the Department of Audio and Visual Arts at the Ionian University, at the Medical School of the University of Ioannina and at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, at the Department of Media and Journalism of the Aristotle University, at the Hellenic Open University. Her research interests include the anthropology of health, gender and care, visual media in fieldwork and in its communication. Since 2024 Athena Peglidou is full member of the Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination Committee (G.E.A.C.) of the Aristotle University.
