Short CV Presentation

Pagona Papadopoulou received her first degree in History and Archaeology from the School of History and Archaeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece (2000) and then pursued graduate studies (D.E.A.) at the Université de Paris I – Panthéon-Sorbonne in France (2002).At the same university she completed her PhD thesis entitled “De l’unité a l’éclatement: la monnaie et son usage dans le monde byzantin, 1092-1261″ (From Unity to Fragmentation: coinage and its use in the Byzantine world, 1092-1261) (2007).

She has been a Junior Fellow στο Dumbarton Oaks, Harvard University, U.S.A.. (2006-7), Senior Fellowat the Research Center for Anatolian Civilisations, Koç University, Turkey (2007-8), Mary Seeger O’Boyle Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University, U.S.A.(2008-9), post-doctoral researcher  at the National Hellenic Research Foundation, Greece (2014) and Connecting Art Histories Visiting Scholar at the Getty Research Institute, U.S.A. (2024).

She has taught Archaeology and History at the universities of Patras (2009-10), Crete (2010), the Peloponnese (2010), Cyprus (2011-2012), as well as at the Open University of Cyprus (2009-10) and the Hellenic Open University (2014-17). Since 2014 she is a faculty member at the School of History and Archaeology of the Aristotle University of Greece, currently as an associate professor in Byzantine Art and Archaeology.

She has studied numismatic and sigillographic material from excavations and museums in Albania, France, Greece, Cyprus, Serbia, Turkey, the United States of America and the Ukraine.

Her publications focus on the Byzantine numismatic production, circulation and iconography; excavations coin finds and excavation seals; the coinages of the Crusader States; Byzantine sigillography; Byzantine minor arts and the relics of the refugees of the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1922.
