Dr. Joannis N. Markopoulos

Prof. in Technology and  Philosophy of Technoscience

Born October 14, 1948 in Thessaloniki. After the graduation of the German School of Thessaloniki (1966, Abitur), Studies in Physical Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at T.H.Darmstadt/ Germany (Dipl.–Ing., 1973), and PhD-Thesis at the Faculty of Engineering (School of Chemical Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Dr. in Physical Chemistry, 1981). Afterwards, academic career at the Faculty of Engineering, School of Chemical Engineering of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, from 1976/1977 till 2009/2010 (Teaching/Research Assistant 1976-1981, Lecturer 1982-1987, assist. Prof. 1987-2006, assoc Prof. 2006-2010, and Head of the Dept. of Unit Operations and Applied Thermodynamics 2006/2007-2008/2009).

From April 2010 till July 2012, assoc. Prof. at the Faculty of Education, School of Primary Education, Dept. of Science and New Technologies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2010-2012), and from July 2012 Professor of Technology and of Philosophy of Techno-Science at the above mentioned Department of the School of Primary Education; Head of the Dept. (2011/2012 and 2014/2015).

On August 31, 2015, retired, while continuing to teach at the Post-graduate Programme of the School (Two-years Programme till 2018/2019), participating also as supervisor of three PhD-theses (completed), as member of a number of consulting committees for PhD-theses, one of them still running, and as member of examination committees for a number of PhD-theses (completed) as well. Moreover, supervisor of one PhD-thesis (completed) at the School of Chemical Engineering, as well as member of consulting and examination committees of many PhD-theses.

From 2020/2021 (with the exception of my cource offered Winter- Semesters 2022/2023 and 2023/2024, in virtue of personal reasons), Professor at the Interdepartamental Post-graduate Programme in Philosophy: “Philosophical, Pedagogical and Interdisciplinary Anthropology”, School of Philosophy and Education, Faculty of Philosophy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Supervisor, one Ph.D.-Thesis, Department of Chemical Engineering, as well as member in consulting and examination committees for Doctoral Theses, Department of Chemical Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Additionally, Supervisor, three Ph.D.-Theses, Faculty of Education, School of Primary Education, Dept. of Science and New Technologies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and member, examination committee of a Doctoral Thesis still running. Moreover, Supervisor, two Masster-Theses, completed 2023, and member, examination committees, Interdepartamental Post-graduate Programme in Philosophy: “Philosophical, Pedagogical and Interdisciplinary Anthropology”, School of Philosophy and Education, Faculty of Philosophy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Also member of three examination committees for PhD theses (2019 & 2020) at the School of Philosophy and Education, Faculty of Philosophy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Reviewer, seven International Journals of Chemical Engineering, and member of the advisory board in one of them (1/2006-4/2011). 163 citations (h = 6), 8 citations in English and German Books of Chemical Engineering, and 1 in a Greek book of Medicine.

Research interests and publications in the fields of Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Philosophy and Philosophy and Ethics of Science and Technology.

Publications: Nine Books and Book Translations (in Greek), in the following fields: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering (3 books); Philosophy, and Philosophy and Ethics of Science and Technology (2 book translations, also editor, and 4 books, 1 of them in English, concerning Science & Ethics, Philosophy of Technoscience, and Essays on Critical Thinking). Furthermore, two Poetry Books (one in German – translation from the Greek edition – and one in Greek).

75 paper publications and announcements in scientific domestic and international journals, collective volumes and domestic and international conferences: a) In the fields of Physical Chemistry & Chemical Engineering (23, in international scientific journals, in English – or in German, for two of them – and 6, in conferences, as J. Markopoulos, with 163 citations and 8 citations in books, in English or in German), and 1 in a Greek medical book, b) In the fields of Philosophy and Philosophy and Ethics of Science and Technology (36 in collective volumes and journals – 12 of them in English and 24 in Greek –, and 10, in conferences, as J. N. Markopoulos). Also, 7 book reviews. Reviewer: Seven international scientific journals in Chemical Engineering; also member of the advisory board, in one of them (1/2006-4/2011).

Member of the Greek Philosophical Society, of International Association of Greek Philosophy and of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Philosophie (DGPhil). Furthermore, member of the scientific committee of the Greek philosophical Journals: Philosophein. Political – Anthropological Issues, since October 2014, and Greek Philosophical Review (Journal of the Greek Philosophical Society), since September 2021; also, regular contributor to Utopia. Review of Theory and Culture, since April 2018.

More than 230 articles, since 1981, in Greek periodicals and newspapers, regarding scientific, philosophical and educational issues. Works in Philosophy and Ethics of Science and Technology are cited in a number of Theses and other relevant publications in Greek.
