Ioannis Kontakis was born in Heraklion, Crete. In 2010, he enrolled in the Department of History and Archaeology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), and in 2014, he graduated with a degree in History, earning a grade of “very good.”

In the same year, he succeded the exams for the Master degree diploma in the same Department, in Modern and Contemporary Greek and European History. In 2017, he received the  diploma with the grade of “excellent.”

In 2019, he was accepted into the doctoral program of the aforementioned Department and completed it in September 2023 with unanimous “excellent” grades. His dissertation topic was “Il Possedimento”: seeking the role of local administration in the Italian strategic plans for the Dodecanese (1922-1943)

During the spring semester of 2023-2024, he worked as an appointed teacher in the Department of History and Archaeology at AUTH as part of the academic teaching experience acquisition program, teaching modern Mediterranean history.
