Eleni Papagianni is an Associate Professor in Classical Archaeology with a focus on the Roman era at the Department of History and Archaeology of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). She has been a member of this department since 2011, initially as a Lecturer, then as an Assistant Professor, and, since 2020, as an Associate Professor. Additionally, she held the position of Director of the Department of Archaeology during the academic year 2019-2020. In the undergraduate program, she instructs courses in classical archaeology, including compulsory courses, compulsory courses within specific modules, compulsory seminars within modules, and optional courses. In the postgraduate program, she teaches Roman archaeology courses. She is the Director of Dion Univeristy Excavation since 2010. She has been involved in this excavation for several years, mentoring students in fieldwork and assisting in the organization and documentation of archaeological material. As the scientific manager, she oversees two ongoing research projects associated with the Dion University excavation, both of which are currently in progress. Furthermore, she previously held the role of scientific coordinator for a funded research project focused on marble sarcophagi from the imperial era. Additionally, she participated as a faculty member in two research projects funded by GSRI and H.F.R.I., respectively. One project concentrated on Roman sculpture in Greece, while the other delved into the inscriptions of the Dion University excavation. Eleni Papagianni actively engages in non-funded scientific projects aimed at publishing archaeological material. Some notable projects include the study of sculptures at the Archaeological Museum in Thessaloniki, imperial portraits at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Roman sculptures at the Archaeological Museum in Kilkis, and sculptures from the Dion University excavation. Her academic contributions extend to the publication of two monographs on Roman sarcophagi, one of which is part of the Sarkophag-Studien series of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin. She has authored over 150 comprehensive entries on Roman sculptures in scientific museum catalogues, including the “Catalogue of Sculpture in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki” (Volumes III and IV), “Catalogue of Roman Imperial Portraits in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens,” and the forthcoming “Catalogue of Roman Sculptures in the Archaeological Museum of Kilkis.” Eleni Papagianni has also written several articles covering various aspects of Greek and Roman sculpture, such as Roman sarcophagi, funerary reliefs, portraits, and idealistic sculptures. In addition, she has edited two collective volumes.
