Dr. Vangelis Economou is a veterinarian and a graduate of the Department of Veterinary Medicine of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1999). He was awarded his PhD in the field of Microbiology in 2006 by the Medical School of the University of Ioannina. He has undertaken postdoctoral training at the University of Bonn, the Central Public Health Laboratory Service (UK), and the University of Copenhagen.
From 2006 to 2013, he worked as an official veterinarian in the Region of Epirus and as a fixed-term Lecturer at the University of Ioannina and the Technological Educational Institute of Epirus. Since 2013, he has been working at the Laboratory of Hygiene of Foods of Animal Origin and Veterinary Public Health of the Department of Veterinary Medicine, School of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he serves as Associate Professor and has assumed the position of Laboratory Director since September 2024.
He has contributed to the authorship of 65 articles in peer-reviewed international journals, 5 chapters in international edited volumes, and more than 80 conference presentations. His publications have received over 1,600 citations, with an h-index of 20, mainly derived from his work on antimicrobial resistance. He has served as an external evaluator for 10 international and national research projects and as a scientific editor and guest editor for peer-reviewed international journals.
He has collaborated in research projects primarily aimed at enhancing the safety and competitiveness of Greek meat. His current research interests focus on the hygiene of meat and fishery products, with emphasis on the control of foodborne pathogens and antimicrobial resistance.
