Dr. Filippos (Phil) A. Aravanopoulos, is Professor of Forest Genetics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and a Full Member of the Hellenic Agricultural Academy, Chair of Forest Science. His background couples Forest & Environmental Science (B.Sc.) & Tree Genetics (MScF, Ph.D., postdoctoral research) & has studied in Greece, Canada & Sweden. He held research and academic positions in Canada and Greece. His research has been funded by International Organizations (European Commission, International Energy Agency) & National Organizations of Canada, Greece & Sweden, and has been the principal investigator/coordinator, or partner in several national and international research projects. He is has served as the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the National Agricultural Foundation of Greece, overseeing scientific research, research staff recruitment & promotions for 30 Research Institutes that focus on agriculture, forestry, fisheries & veterinary science. He is the Coordinator of the Population, Ecological & Conservation Genetics Unit of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) and the Chairman of the Hellenic Scientific Society for Plant Genetics & Breeding. In AUTH he is the Director of the Post-Graduate Program on Biomonitoring and Bioeconomy, and the Director of the Forest Genetics LabProf. Aravanopoulos has also served as Leader of the Genetic Monitoring Working Group of the European Forest Genetic Resources Network (EUFORGEN), as a member of the FAO Expert Group on the State of the World Forest Genetic Resources and is the Chair of the Hellenic Scientific Society for Plant Genetics & Breeding.. He serves as reviewer for more than 40 international journals & as an Editorial Board member in four. He has given over 30 invited presentations in Universities & Conferences in Canada, China, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden & Turkey. He has published over 220 full research papers, of which over 110 in international peer-reviewed journals & over 50 in refereed international books & international proceedings.
