Dr. Alexandros O. Konstantinidis is an Assistant Professor of Small Animal Medicine at the Companion Animal Clinic, School of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He also serves as a senior clinician in the Internal Medicine Unit, where he is involved in the diagnosis and management of referral cases with a particular emphasis on gastroenterology, hepatology, clinical nutrition, and gastrointestinal endoscopy.
He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 2012, followed by a Master’s degree (MSc) in Small Animal Medicine in 2014 and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Small Animal Medicine in 2020, all from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His doctoral research investigated inflammatory cytokines and microRNAs in canine inflammatory bowel disease, reflecting his long-standing interest in gastrointestinal diseases and translational research.
His research focuses on canine and feline gastroenterology, hepatology, chronic enteropathies, gastrointestinal biomarkers, clinical nutrition, and minimally invasive diagnostic techniques. His work combines clinical investigation with translational research aimed at improving the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal diseases in companion animals.
Dr. Konstantinidis has completed Visiting Scholar appointments at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State University, where he collaborated with Professor Albert E. Jergens on comparative gastroenterology and translational research projects. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications in international veterinary journals, including PLOS ONE, BMC Veterinary Research, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, Veterinary Sciences, The Veterinary Journal, Veterinary Record, Journal of Small Animal Practice, and Topics in Companion Animal Medicine. He also serves as a reviewer for several international veterinary journals and has been Guest Editor for special issues of Veterinary Sciences focusing on gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreatic diseases in dogs and cats.
His teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and postgraduate courses in small animal internal medicine, particularly gastroenterology, hepatology, and clinical nutrition, as well as clinical training of veterinary undergraduate and postgraduate students. In recognition of his teaching, he received the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award and the Excellence in Postgraduate Teaching Award from the Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Dr. Konstantinidis is an active member of several national and international professional societies, including the European Society of Comparative Gastroenterology (ESCG), the Society of Comparative Hepatology (SCH), the European Society of Veterinary Endocrinology (ESVE), the Federation of Companion Animal Veterinary Associations (FECAVA), the Hellenic Companion Animal Veterinary Society (HCAVS), and the Hellenic Veterinary Medical Society (HVMS).
